"Public Enemy has earned notoriety with more than 20 years of politically charged music about fighting the power, challenging racism and declaring that 911 was a joke."

wapo is again, totally missing the point here. public enemy was not saying 911 (or 9/11) WAS a joke, they are saying 911 IS a joke, that emergency services are largely oppressive towards/ unresponsive to minority and disadvantaged communities.
I feel like including that claim in the article is intended to undermine the value of their music. by referring to a statement which most of the wapo's readership doesn't (or couldn't) understand, a statement which could be (and was) easily misconstrued, they are trivializing the intended political meaning behind the claim.
AND this is an article about public enemy reaching out to homeless communities, to whom 911 is a joke.

    fail, on so many levels.
but leave it to me to analyze the shit out of it.
